Membership

Why Membership?

What continues to differentiate credit unions from other financial institutions are the concepts of loyalty and social justice. Membership is an expression of that mutual commitment.

Unfortunately many credit unions have been forced to morph away from a community-based field-of-membership in order to effectively compete with banks. Nonetheless, the collaborative spirit is kept alive, perhaps reflecting the fundamental human desire to belong to a visionary society.

Who can be a Member?

Shambhala Credit Union’s field-of-membership is defined in our ByLaws, recently updated by our Board of Directors, and approved on April 7, 2016 by the Colorado Commissioner of Financial Services.  Please call our office to obtain more information on membership.

King Ashoka was a prominent and legendary historical figure who lived in India during the 2nd Century BC.  It is said that he converted to Buddhism after seeing the terrible carnage of the Kalinga War, which he initiated.  In his 1920 book Outline of History HG Wells writes,  “Amidst the tens of thousands of names of monarchs that crowd the columns of history, their majesties and graciousnesses and serenities and royal highnesses and the like, the name of Ashoka shines, and shines, almost alone, a star.”
