King Ashoka was a prominent and legendary historical figure who lived in India during the 2nd Century BC.  It is said that he converted to Buddhism after seeing the terrible carnage of the Kalinga War, which he initiated.  In his 1920 book Outline of History HG Wells writes,  “Amidst the tens of thousands of names of monarchs that crowd the columns of history, their majesties and graciousnesses and serenities and royal highnesses and the like, the name of Ashoka shines, and shines, almost alone, a star.”
